History & background

Dormeuil was founded in Paris in 1842 by Jules Dormeuil, initially as a cloth trading house that sourced English and Scottish fabrics for the French tailoring market. Over the following century the company developed its own manufacturing capabilities, weaving its finest cloths in the Yorkshire mills of England while maintaining its French luxury identity and sensibility.

The house is famous in the bespoke world for going further than any other mill in its pursuit of extraordinary raw materials. The Amadeus collection uses fibers from the vicuña, the qiviuk (muskox), and the shahtoosh (Tibetan antelope — now protected), and sits at the absolute pinnacle of available cloth. More accessible but still exceptional is the Woolmark Platinum collection, which combines fine merino with silk and cashmere to produce cloths of remarkable softness and visual depth.

Dormeuil's cloth tends toward a more theatrical luxury than Italian mills — richer colors, more complex patterns, and finishes that make a statement. This makes it particularly popular with clients who want their bespoke commission to be noticed, and with tailors who want to offer something clearly distinct from the mainstream Italian offerings.
