History & background

Holland & Sherry was founded in London in 1836 as a cloth merchant supplying the Savile Row tailoring trade. Over nearly two centuries the company evolved from merchant to manufacturer, developing its own mill operations in Scotland and becoming one of the most comprehensive cloth houses available to bespoke tailors anywhere in the world.

The company's range spans from lightweight tropicals and fine worsteds through to heavy tweeds and overcoating, with a particular reputation for its wool and silk blends — cloths that add a subtle sheen and lightness without sacrificing the structure that bespoke tailoring requires. The silk content also improves the way cloth takes dye, producing richer, deeper colors than pure wool alone.

Holland & Sherry maintains extensive sample books — known in the trade as bunches — which tailors use to show clients the full breadth of available cloth. Their London showroom and international representatives serve bespoke houses across North America, Europe, and Asia. The company has been a supplier to the British royal household and to most of the significant Savile Row tailors over its nearly 200 years of operation.
