History & background

Vitale Barberis Canonico was founded in 1663 in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, making it the oldest wool mill still in operation anywhere in the world. For more than three and a half centuries, the mill has operated on the same principle: control the full production chain, from raw merino fiber sourcing through spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing, to ensure consistent quality in every meter of cloth.

VBC is the go-to recommendation for tailors introducing clients to their first bespoke suit. The mill produces an enormous range of weights and constructions — from crisp 9oz worsted for year-round business suiting to heavier flannel for autumn commissions — all woven with the characteristic Italian hand that balances drape and structure without the stiffness of English cloth.

Among the collections most requested in bespoke ateliers are the Escorial, made from a rare Spanish merino breed, and the Master, which sits in the Super 130s to 150s range and delivers exceptional softness without sacrificing durability. VBC cloth is used by bespoke tailors across North America, Europe, and Japan.
